Join us at our events!

We are inviting middle school and high school girls to listen to several speakers and participate in fun STEM activities. Our next event, Rx for Success is scheduled for February 2, 2024.

 Gearing Towards Success! (Event 1)

Our first event took place on June 30th, 2023, at 12-3pm at UTRGV's Engineering building. Our members had the opportunity to listen to Ms. Perez, a member of the Society of Women Engineers, Mrs. Guerra, an Electrical Engineer, Mrs. Leija , a Physical Therapist, and Mrs.Vega, a Civil Engineer. (Left to right)

UTRGV provided our members with an educational tour of their Engineering building. In this tour, our members learned about nanofibers, the different techniques Engineering students use to learn, and the many different programs UTRGV offers for middle school and high school students.

In this picture, our members are listening to Dr. Benitez as she talks about a high school program hosted at UTRGV called PEMS.

In this picture, Dr. Benitez explains how Dr. Lozano created machines that make nanofibers. According to Dr. Benitez, Dr. Lozano concluded her research by observing a cotton candy machine at a fair, she then created a machine that weaved nanofibers the way cotton candy is made. Our members agree that this is one of the most interesting facts we learned that day!

Rx for Success ! (Event 2)

On February 2, 2024, SheSTEM had its second panel discussion event with UTRGV and its first medical-focused event. STISD Health Professions partnered with SheSTEM and sent 60 students to learn from five amazing panelists : Dr. Evangelista, a doctor of physical therapy, Dr. Flores-Hernandez, an optometric glaucoma specialist, Dr. Maestre, a neurologist, Dr. Escalona, a pediatrician, and Dr. Hochschild, a surgeon in residency (right to left). This was a unique experience for all students involved.

On the left image, SheSTEM's Board Member Sofia Martinez and members Andrea Zuniga, Celia Jasso, Ivanna Sanchez and Tamara Flores pose for the camera during a tour of the UTRGV School of Medicine provided by UTRGV after the SheSTEM panel discussion.

On the right image, SheSTEM's Historian Kareen Garza, President Valeria Delgado, Vice President Marselle Sandoval, and member Danna Alvarez take a picture at the UTRGV School of Medicine.

In these pictures, students learn about what a regular day in a medical student's life looks like. They had the opportunity to see the library, laboratories, and various classrooms in the medical school.

Before attending the SheSTEM event, students ate lunch at Peter Piper's Pizza and played fun games!
